Guttering doesn’t get much attention until it stops working. Then you notice a damp patch on the wall, a puddle by the back door, or water running down the brickwork every time it rains. By that point the guttering has usually been struggling for a while.
Old uPVC and cast iron guttering can crack, sag, and pull away from the fascia over time, especially after a run of wet Lancashire winters. Here are five signs worth checking for before it causes damage to your walls, roofline, or foundations.
1. Water overflowing during rain
If water is spilling over the sides of the gutter rather than running through it, that’s usually a sign of a blockage, a section that’s sagging out of line, or guttering that’s simply too small for the amount of rainfall coming off your roof. A one-off overflow after heavy rain isn’t unusual, but if it happens every time it rains, the guttering itself is the problem, not the weather.
2. Sagging or pulling away from the roofline
Guttering should run in a straight, even line. If you can see dips, sags, or gaps where it’s pulled away from the fascia board, the brackets holding it in place have likely failed. This often happens with age as the fixings weaken, or when the guttering has been carrying more water and debris weight than it was designed for. Once it starts sagging in one place, the rest of the run tends to follow.
3. Cracks, splits, or visible damage
Small cracks might not seem urgent, but they let water escape exactly where you don’t want it, running down the wall behind the gutter rather than into the downpipe. UPVC guttering can become brittle with age and UV exposure, and once it starts cracking, patch repairs rarely hold for long. This is one of the clearer signs that replacement is more sensible than another temporary fix.
4. Peeling paint, staining, or damp patches on walls
If you notice streaks running down the brickwork, peeling paint near the roofline, or damp patches appearing inside on upstairs walls, that’s often water finding its way past guttering that isn’t doing its job. Left unchecked, this kind of water ingress can lead to more serious and expensive repairs to the brickwork, render, or timber underneath.

A recent job in Chorley — new white uPVC guttering, fascias and soffits fitted to replace guttering that had cracked and started leaking behind the brickwork. As well as giving the roofline a clean, fresh finish, uPVC won’t rot, crack, or need repainting the way the old timber and cast iron did, so it’s one less thing to think about for years to come.
5. Guttering pulling downpipes out of alignment
Watch what happens where the guttering meets the downpipe. If the downpipe has come loose, is misaligned, or leaks at the joint, it’s often because the guttering above it has moved or is under strain. This is easy to miss from ground level, so it’s worth a proper look during a dry spell rather than waiting until the next downpour shows you.
What to do next
None of these signs mean you need to replace the whole system overnight, but they’re all worth acting on before winter rain puts more strain on guttering that’s already struggling. We supply and fit new uPVC guttering, fascias and soffits across Chorley, Coppull, and the surrounding areas, and can take a look and give you an honest answer on whether a full replacement or a partial fix makes sense for your property.
